North Adams has seen an uptick in motor vehicle violations when interacting with school busses on the road.
For the safety of children and all road users, all vehicles must stop in both directions when approaching a school bus with flashing red lights.
When a vehicle approaches a school bus with flashing yellow lights, drivers should slow down and prepare to stop—children may be boarding or exiting soon.
Under no circumstances should a vehicle pass a stopped school bus with red flashing lights either by going around the school bus or on the other side of the road—it is illegal and subject to fines, license suspension, or other penalties.
We ask that drivers stay alert and drive cautiously, especially during school arrival and dismissal times. Children may cross unexpectedly so please always check for pedestrians before proceeding. Following these laws helps protect students and ensures everyone's safety on the road.
With this in mind, the North Adams Police Department has partnered with Dufour Escorted Tours, Inc., and will be spot-checking bus routes and actively addressing vehicles that violate the law.
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our city's families safe while our students board and exit school buses.
